Innovative cathodic protection

Durable corrosion protection for Ecocreation Ecodigesters

Ecocreation offers controlled electro-chemical protection in its Ecodigesters for customers working with a high-acid organic waste stream. This module is available on the Ecocreation All-in-One range and on the Ecocreation Industrial Range.

This protection on Ecocreation Ecodigesters is an electrochemical technique used by Ecocreation to protect the stainless steel (SS) Ecodigesters from corrosion, especially in high-acid environments. This process prevents metal oxidation by keeping the metal in a protective state to prevent corrosion.

This solution ensures that the metal in contact with highly acidic organic (food) waste remains negatively charged. This stops the natural rusting process. This significantly extends the life of the machines, even in highly corrosive conditions.

Application in fruit and vegetable processing

During fruit and vegetable processing, processing machines often come into contact with organic waste streams with high acidity. This acidic environment normally accelerates the corrosion process, even in stainless steel, which can lead to structural damage, loss of performance and higher maintenance costs.

Ecocreation has innovatively applied electrochemical protection to its Ecodigesters. This technique, combined with specially selected metal alloys, enables the machines to process organic streams with high acidity without corrosion problems. This makes the machines not only more durable, but also extremely reliable, even under intense loads.

Benefits of this innovative application:

Long service life: By effectively preventing corrosion, machines last significantly longer.
Cost-saving: Fewer maintenance and replacements result in lower operational costs for the customer.
Hygienic and food-safe: The absence of rust prevents bacterial growth and makes the machines safer for food processing.
Sustainability: Less wear and tear and less need for replacement contribute to a more sustainable production process.
Unique in the industry: The clever combination of special stainless steel alloys with electrochemical protection is unique within the fruit and vegetable processing sector.
Technological innovation: Ecocreation is at the forefront of technological innovation and shows with this application how advanced techniques are practically used for added value in processing organic waste streams in the food processing industry.

Through this progressive approach, Ecocreation is setting a new standard in the industry, offering customers not only cost advantages, but also a more sustainable and hygienic solution for processing organic waste streams.

Cathodic protection with a controlled electric current offers a significant advantage over protection with sacrificial anodes, which operate through an uncontrolled chemical process. The main advantage is that with cathodic protection, the current intensity and protection levels can be precisely controlled and adjusted to the conditions. This results in more efficient and sustainable protection of the steel, whereas sacrificial anodes become consumed over time and need to be replaced periodically. As a result, cathodic protection offers a more reliable and maintenance-friendly solution, especially in environments with high corrosive loads.

Operation of cathodic protection

In cathodic protection, the steel to be protected is connected to a sacrificial anode or an external electric current source. This anode or current causes the steel to become negatively charged, stopping its natural tendency to rust. The corrosion process is reversed or slowed down, as it were, because the steel itself no longer loses electrons and therefore does not oxidise.

Application in steel machinery for processing fruit and vegetables

In fruit and vegetable processing, machines often come into contact with materials with low pH, meaning they have high acidity. These acidic conditions significantly accelerate the corrosion process, as acid can accelerate the oxidation process of steel.

Ecocreation applies cathodic protection in its stainless steel Ecodigesters used for processing organic waste streams with high acidity, such as fruit and vegetable residues. This keeps the machines in good condition for longer, even in these challenging working environments.

Benefits of cathodic protection in this application:

Extended lifespan: By reducing corrosion, machines last significantly longer, even when exposed to acidic substances.
Lower maintenance costs: Less corrosion means fewer repairs and replacements, saving costs.
Better hygiene: Less rusting prevents accumulation of bacteria and mould, which is essential in the food processing industry.
Sustainability: A longer service life and fewer replacements contribute to a more sustainable production process.
Structural integrity: The strength and reliability of the machines are maintained even during intensive use.
Consistent performance: By preventing corrosion, machines continue to perform optimally without loss of efficiency.

Ecocreation's application of cathodic protection is an innovative example of it applying technology that can contribute to more sustainable and efficient processing of organic waste streams and food waste.
