Supermarkets

Supermarkets play a crucial role in society's food supply, but face several challenges, including managing organic waste. To this end, Ecocreation offers the solution to convert organic waste into soil improver on site: centrally, decentrally, or a combination of both.

Challenges with organic waste in supermarkets

1. High service level:

Supermarkets run a high level of service and a wide range of products to satisfy customer needs. This leads to shrinkage, which results in waste.

2. Unpredictability:

Unpredictability of customer behaviour, inefficient inventory management & inefficient logistics increase wastage.

3. Aesthetic quality:

Consumers and supermarkets often set high standards for the aesthetic quality of products, leading to rejection of 'ugly' but still edible food. Customers often want fresh and perfect-looking produce, which increases the pressure to throw away produce that does not meet these expectations.

4. Logistical challenges:

Storing and transporting fresh produce requires specific conditions, such as temperature control, to prevent spoilage. If these conditions are not optimal, organic waste can result.

5. Environmental impact:

Organic waste contributes to the overall environmental impact of supermarkets. Rotting food produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas, which is harmful to the environment.

Solution

Ecocreation offers a solution to process food waste in supermarkets and/or at the distribution centre to reduce environmental impact. By implementing the Ecocreation Ecodigester, supermarket chains can significantly reduce the amount of food waste, save CO2 emiises (15 tonnes of CO2 per 100tonne fval) and save costs, thus contributing to a more sustainable and efficient food supply.
